The story of Mary Kingsley makes for fascinating reading for anybody interested in Africa, medicine or the strength of women in adversity.
During her short life her determination to succeed shines through from her early age when her father tended almost to ignore her. Only thirty-eight years later she died a hero to many and an example for others to follow. Travelling through West Africa, dressed in black heavy Victorian clothing, with bonnet and neck high ruffles. It is difficult to comprehend how she achieved what she did, until you read this book. |
